Alexis, the Red, Fire-Breathing Dragon

January 9, 2007

I wish I were eight years old again. I would make up stories about huge red, fire-breathing dragons named Alexis and fearless little girls called Ella with bulbous noses that ride on the backs of winged horses to defeat evil wizards and restore magic to withered, enchanted gardens. This morning’s workshop at 826 Valencia, the literary nonprofit where I’ve been volunteering for the past few years, was excellent. The kids were plugged in and switched on. They created an amazing story that would have made William Goldman (of Princess Bride fame) defer to them for all his future fairy tale projects. I am in awe of their ability to take an idea and spin it into something fun and even coherent.

I think it’s hard for some journalists (perhaps even more so for those of us who specialize in writing about the arts) to think like artists: to give up analysis and just play.
